I remember Pounchki day in Hamtramck. I remember Pounchkis, Chruschiki (Angel Wings) and Makowiec (Poppy seed rolls). It seems that everyone; aunts, uncles and neighbors had a sack of these wonderful treats and the children filled up on the goodies. Because of full stomachs supper in the evening was not required for that one day. I think the owners of the pastry shops were very thankful that such a day occured and one of the shops was the Martha Washington Bakery. Ah what a treat, it is only too bad that the children of today may not be able to enjoy the pleasure of what we had.

The other name for chruściki is faworki. This name is even more used nowadays in Poland..

Blazej,

it is interesting because in Poland the name faworki is the more popular one but here in the USA for some uknown reasons everybody call it Chrust or chrusciki. Probably this was the older name known to Polish immigrants from hundred years ago.
By the way, we do chrust here not on "smalec" (larch?) but on the vegetable oil and it is the same good

Jaga and Blazej. When we were children and to this day chruschiki was called angel wings. Perhaps it was because they were light, fluffy and covered with white powdered sugar. anyway, the grownups called them chruschiki and we children called them angel wings.
