Hi my name is Ruth and I am so glad to finally find a site that I can relate to. I am 26 years old, I was diagnosed with stage IIIb breast cancer last November 2001 at the ripe old age of 25. I had a bi-lateral mastectomy on December 26th 2001. The lump was in my left breast and was 8cm large. Also I had 10/13 positive nodes and am HER2 positive. I opted to have my other breast removed because if I could help it I never wanted to go through yet another surgery and more chemo. About a month after the surgery my tissue expander on my right side got infected and had to be removed.
CHEMO was the worst thing I have ever gone through I think. Even worse than losing my breasts and hair. I was so utterly depressed and anxious. How glad I am that it is over. I am currently undergoing herceptin and radiation. So I am finally seeing an end in sight.
Well now that I've told you all my cancer history I will stop talking. Again I am so thankful to find younger people that I can relate to. I ask that anyone who wants to talk to please email me at nancyruthellen@aol.com I will be happy to correspond. I have a 22 month old son so I will also be happy to discuss child issues also.
Thank You All for listening.

I'm so glad you posted! I'm glad things are looking like they're working out for you now. My stepmother had to have a breast removed but she got through it all and is very happy now, going on with her life.

How was yours detected?

Hi Lisa, thank you for replying. Yes things seem to be going very well for me and mine finally. To answer your question: I discovered a large lump on the outer side of my left breast. I already had an appointment with my family doctor for an ear infection for the next day. I was about to walk out of her office when I casually mentioned the lump. My doctor examined me and said "I'm certain its nothing, your too young, and there is no history." "But lets make sure." And proceeded to send me for a mammogram. And from there everything happened very quickly. Within about 5 weeks I was undergoing surgery. And my life changed forever.

Hi Ruth!

So glad you found us! Sorry it took me so long to reply. Things are crazy around here, 5 rugrats with school and all. Mommy's going crazy between practices and reports.

It made me feel good to read how well you are doing. My neighbor's daughter just within the month had a breast and all the lymph nodes in her armpit removed. A permant line into her chest for radiation was placed last week. They are in fairly good spirits and although the doctors have told them that they are sure all the cancer was removed, in the back of their minds they fear the worst. Coming from a personal stand point, could you please give me any suggestions as to comfort this family. I do not know the daughter too well but her mother and I are very close friends being neighbors. It's hard on her especially, because she just lost her only son 3 years ago this month and her daughter is her only child left outside of her one and only grandchild. My heart aches for her every time I see her. I always stay positive and reassure her but I feel like my words are meaningless, you know?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
