Any or all of the above will serve well as a ground cover. What's great about thyme is the beautiful scent released when you walk on it! The bees love their flowers too, which is a good thing. You could try several species of Thyme for a variety, or stick with just one for good specimen effect.

At first, depending on the size of soil you wish to cover, you may have to buy several plants. But they divide easily right from the get-go, so you may get quite a few plants from two or three medium size plants from the nursery. Just make sure you have a sharp, sterile knife and make a clean cut to separate the original plant into several. A root ball that is cut will grow back many roots; a root ball that is torn apart will more than likely die.

Thyme loves the sun, so that is where you will plant it. If you plant it in the shade, don't expect miracles. It may live, but it won't thrive. Any other details that I've forgot? Just ask!
