I know that a couple of you have made some rag quilts and I am thinking of making one in the fall for my husband. His favorite team is the Vikings, and I got three yards of Vikings fabric on sale for $5.00/yard. I have another Vikings print to go with it, and I was thinking about using his old Dockers to cut up for the back, with no batting. For you experienced raggers, do these fabrics sound like they will work? Or do you think they won't rag enough? I have a few months to plan, so I'll probably change my mind by then, but right now this is on my list. I want to add interest to the two fabrics that I'm using, and ragging seems like the easy way to do it.

I have seen quilts made with regular fabrics instead of flannels and they work fine. I think that the flannels fray more easily because they have a looser weave. You may want to go ahead and use the batting in the middle to make it more cushy feeling.

One word of advice is to take the quilt to the laundromat instead of using your home washer and use a fast agitating cycle. The agitation is what loosens the fibers.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll skip the batting on this one, though. It's for Todd, and he is so hot-blooded! I keep telling him I haven't made him a quilt because he doesn't need one, but I don't think he's buying it. I'm hoping that the frayed edges will add some softness to it.

The homespun fabrics fray pretty well too. Laura, maybe you could make a small doll quilt and see how much it frays. Then you'll know without having made a big quilt and possibly being disappointed.

Thanks for the suggestion about the doll quilt. We can never have enough of those!
