We've heard it before but here is an interesting article.

What are your thoughts? Is your weight gain genetic?

It has always been a family trait of my mothers side to be bigger. Thankfully she married my father and gave her children the added benefit of height to spread it out upon. I may be a size 20, but I am also 6 feet tall.
Every family portrait that Ive ever seen from the 1960's and before, all the ladies have been good sized non-waifs, especially if they were over say 40.

There is no way with my genetic makeup as an example for me to ever be a size 6 or less. Hell, I think that if I even made it to a 10 I'd be a bone rack. So Im very happy where Im at right now, could I stand to loose some? Sure, but is my boyfriend complaining? No. =]

My mom is one of 10 kids (2 sons, oldest and youngest!). Of her 6 living sisters and her: two are morbidly obese, two are overweight and three are close to normal weight (one was overweight until she started chemo). So, yes I think it's in my genes. Unfortunately, so is diabetes and since I had gestational diabetes with my first son, I really need to get my weight down.

Of course my younger sister has the same gene and she's about a size 12/14, that little bugger

This is what I observed at my grandmother's 90th birthday; I stood out like a jowly St. Bernard standing among a pack of grey hounds. All skinny, all related, and all no further from me than first cousin in the gene pool. The difference: they ALL exercise and watch what they eat. I eat and watch people exercise on TV. There is no secret to this...no magic bullet, no evil plot, no heinous plan...you eat more calories than you burn off...tada! you're fat Trust me I Know.... Am I willing to do anything about it? MMmmm, I was a size 24 this time last year and now I am a 16...see that damned exercise Does work...sad but true...I am living, sore, hungry, tired, annoyed proof...

But Roni I think there is something in our brains that makes each of us feel like we need more or less food. Don't fall into the trap of "I'm weak because I'm hungry." ! Your skinny relatives probably have a different brain system. If you could be one of them for a day, you might be surprised to find out they're just not hungry as often as you are, and they just don't have the biological need for food. It might feel like being on a diet pill all the time that takes away your appetite. Your need for more food than them could even be a recessive trait you inherited from several generations ago.

As for the question of genetics generally, I do believe it has a strong influence on weight, just like our appearances in general (nose, eyes, fingers, etc.). Some of that is genetic across particular ethnic groups or nationalities even. Eskimo peoples really are intended to be "fatter" on average than many other races, for example. Just the other night I saw some young expert jump-ropers doing a big routine. You can imagine how in shape all of them were. The girls with eskimo-type heritage WERE fatter than the little bony, light-haired white girls. But they were kick-butt in shape!

There are also issues of fat distribution and bone structure (as Wendy mentioned) that are genetic and can affect how "fat" we think we are. For example, my arms are skinny, but I carry all my fat in my lower body. I can always pinch several inches on my thighs, for example. Also, my butt will never, ever look thin. My hip bones are bony and wide, and my butt is just big. :| My aunt and I have similar bodies this way, even though it seems like all our other relatives do not. We finally looked at some old pictures on her dad's side of the family, and we think we found the culprits!

(I also have thin, stringy hair and ALL my relatives have thick hair. Im still trying to figure out that one . . . )

So anyway, I think that genetics is a factor for everyone, in terms of fat storage and distribution and appetite. Environmental factors then combine with that for the final result.

I just discovered that our new forum has a time limit for editing posts (doh!).

Anyway, after posting above, I witnessed an unrelated argument between some folks regarding whether "Eskimo" is a proper term. There doesn't seem to be agreement on this, but I certainly appologize if anyone was offended! Please allow me to replace that with "Inuit," and please know I certainly didn't mean any harm by using "Eskimo."

Thanks,

Chris

OK - I'm a size 16 and only because I really eat low cal and low carb - Here's a photo of my paternal grandmother and her sister, sitting at the ends of the front row. Yes, I think it's genetic.

Everyone on my dad's side of the family is big. My mother is Korean and constantly harps on me. She doesn't believe that weight gain is genetic. My youngest sister and I both take after my dad's side. We're curvier and have medium-sized frames. My middle sister is more like the Korean side of my family. She's stick thin and not curvy at all.

For me it's hard to tell. I'm adopted and have no idea. Which sucks big time!

On my husband's side of the family, it's hard to tell. I think both of his sisters would be heavy, but one works out like crazy because of health issues. His mother is short and extreamly heavy. She is also extreamely lazy. She refuses to get up and walk for her own health. I think it's both gentics and self.
