Moe, your article makes total sense. It's the thinning of the skin that starts to give that aged look. And, come to think of it, my fuller figured friends do look younger!

I also suspect that for some skinny folks, malnutrition over the years has had a detrimental effect on their skin - not to mention how bad that might be if they are or were ever anorexic.

I do want to add this tip, even though it's so obvious: Don't smoke!

I think the worst-aging people are those who are skinny, have gotten too much sun over the years, and who smoked. I think smoking brings in the wrinkles pronto.

About water glass size . . . Duh! I never even thought about that! I had a check up lately and she told me "Be sure to drink 8 glasses of water a day" and I'm picturing these huge glasses I have at home and how I might drown.

Interestingly, she (the doc) told me that getting enough water might help with some recurring headache problems I've been having, too. Well see!

Chris, you are so right about not smoking! I have never seen a middle ages smoker that doesn't have a ton of lines on their face, particularly around the mouth!

Another tip is not to worship the sun. Native Americans (and many hunters today) use the sun to dry out the skins of animals they have hunted. For heavens sake, that is what we have done to ourselves!

We do need the water since our body is comprised of mostly water. We can dry our skin, hair and even organs out if we don't stay hydrated. I think that is why people become delirious when they are dehydrated.

I have found that when I start with a bad headache, if I drink extra water with my pain meds, the headache gets better, quicker.

90% of all headaches are due to dehydration. Next time, ladies, try drinking the water by itself and see how many of those headaches don't even need the pain meds.

I'd have to say the one factor that has has the greatest effect on my youthful appearance, following my genetic heritage, would be that I avoid the sun.

I think all these things are so true. Sun worshipping is a prime factor. Smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict (I've been told)
Dehydration just drys you up.

One more thing - inherited tendencies. If you look into families, you will find the trait of looking either youthful or older seems to run in the family.

Wow, wonderful discussion everyone. I have to agree with the smoking. Most of those terrible wrinkles around the lips come from smoking. The constant pursing of the lips.

Rae, I woke up with a headache this morning. I have been drinking water for the last two hours. (16 oz. so far!) I'll give it a try for a little longer, but I'm starting to get nauseous. I don't know how long I can stand it before I have to take my meds.

At least for the time being, my skin is hydrating!

Moe, I have to agree that this a wonderful discussion! I can just picture the "constant pursing" and the wrinkles yelling, "Here we come!"

For the last 5 hours, I was doing an experiment with my headache, per Rae. I have certainly hydrated my body (been to the bathroom 5 times!) but the headache persists. I'm going to take my meds now and lay down with my ice pack.

Before I go and since this is about staying young looking...I don't feel very young today and the headache makes my eyes swollen so I don't look very young either. Enough whining...hopefully I'll be back on tonight feeling much better!

Maybe it's the lighting in your house or too much computer. You must have migranes and not just a headache.

I get migraines, but lots of times they start out as "tension" headaches. So if I can prevent the beginning of the tension headache, I can usually ward off the migraine.

Rae, thanks for the info on hydration - I had no idea! I myself have not been staying hydrated lately, I know because I keep getting busy and forgetting to drink. So I bought a new water-boiler plug-in thing to make herbal tea right in my office. That should help!

Trish my have the bad luck of having one of the 10% that won't be prevented by staying hydrated.

Trish, the other thing my doctor said was to stop working at the computer from time to time and do some slow stretches of my neck and shoulders. She said tension there tends to creep up into your head. Of course, once the pain starts in you head, it's pretty hard to get rid of without taking meds.

Thanks for the good words, girls! Yes, I do have migraines, Moe, and when I wake up with one like that, nothing really seems to help except meds, ice packs and bed. (Getting nauseous is a good clue, too). It is almost totally gone now. I laid down for 2 hours and the rain has really been coming. Weather changes seem to aggrevate me the most.

I hope everyone in the path of the remnants of the hurricane is okay. We are being warned of flooding and tornados.

Chris, I do stop working and stretch my neck and shoulders. Thanks! That does help!

I've had migraines to the point of nausea and beyond .Mine have almost always been proceeded by scent auras and/or getting the words turned around in my sentences.. Like audio dyslexia. I know I am tempting the migraine goddess; but I've not had one in about a year. Mine are hormonal and follow my periods...that and a cold sore in the right side of my nose. Ack! all this and mammoslams or we lucky or what?

Just another note on dehydration. It has always been very difficult whenever I had blood drawn. A few years ago, a nurse mentioned that I was dehydrated and to drink extra water for a couple of days before. I started doing that, and now they can always find my vein the first time. I also try to drink a lot of water every day. I think it does help one's skin.

You're totally right Sandi. What a great suggestion. It'd be so much easier on our systems too for those who donate blood. To drink a lot of water before and after.
