Do you have any plans for Valentine's Day? What do you want to do?

My husband has taken a vacation day for Valentine's Day, but since we don't have a babysitter, I'm sure we'll bring our son along whatever we choose to do. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Probably go to my favorite mall an hour away, go out to eat, etc.
My husband took a vacation day last Friday, with the idea of us going to see LOTR Return of the King, but we got sick. It's hard to make plans in the winter, especially because of colds/sinus problems and/or unpredictable weather and temperatures!

I think couples should go all out for Valentines Day and keep it up for as long as they are married.(Til death do us part!) Couples need to do everything they can to keep the romance alive. There is so much that takes the romance out of marriage in day to day living.
That said, I don't know what my husband and I will be doing on Valentines Day. I'll have to start planning now. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hi Janet,
That's great he took off. I'm glad Israel is off al ready for the day because it's the weekend. He's planning a surprise and I get to wear my red dress.

rest...that would be a lovely thing.
actually speaking to each other about something other than business would be a great idea.
Now that I am thinking about...a gaming session for just he and I with wine to sip and some appropriate snaks might be just the thing.

Oh, good it's a Saturday. Depending on the temperature, then. If nice -- we'll go out. If not -- we'll get some Godiva and stay in.
It's very unfortunate that both our birthdays, our anniversary and VDay fall during this season.

Why is it unfortunate, Ice?
How fun for you, Jessica! I love surprises!
Actually, my husband has Saturday off but he took Friday off so we'd have an extra long weekend. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Because it's always during really bad weather so we don't get to go out and *really* celebrate. Ooh! I have that Friday off too! Maybe I should organize a romantic getaway.

I agree that couples need to keep romance in their lives but I don't agree that they must go "all out" on this one particular day because Hallmark says they have to <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I explicitly tell my boyfriend not to get me flowers or jewelry. We make ourselves a romantic meal that we enjoy, we light a fire, pour our favorite wine and cuddle up to a favorite movie. But the key is to be romantic together, not to try to impress each other with lots of cash outlays <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I think far too many people concentrate on the cash aspect of Valentine's Day. Love should never be about money!! When you start putting a price tag on love, you start on a slippery slope. My boyfriend brings me flowers randomly throughout the year to keep fresh flowers on the table, because we enjoy them. I appreciate those $2.99 bouquets from the grocery store much more than I'd ever appreciate a $60 bunch of roses because it was "Rose Day" and he felt obligated to hold up his end of the Romance Bargain <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Here it is Valentines Day and I'm online answering posts...lol...
My husband works from wednesday to Saturday night. We will probably do something like dinner out before we go grocery shopping tomorrow or something.
After 8 years I don't put a whole lot of weight on "special" surprises on Valentines Day. To me the fact that he works so hard and tells me he loves me every time he talks to me is special enough. It's the everyday valentines that I cherish.

Right I think that's exactly my opinion, Jenna. In the first few years of being with Bob we spent time and money on Valentine's Day because "everybody says you should be wined and dined". But after a few years, I was like, This is Ridiculous! Why are we paying a premium on flowers because flower-sellers take advantage of you, waiting in line for an hour because everbody feels "obligated" to go out to dinner, etc?
We show each other our love daily, we don't need Hallmark to tell us when it is most appropriate <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> And we can make our own special dishes for each other far better than a restaurant could. I think true love is better measured by the daily real shows of affection vs the "on cue" once-yearly large outlays of cash <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ice, how did it go? Did you get to make a getaway? <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I love holidays and surprises. We do it because we enjoy it, not because anyone has "told" us to. I get the flowers, cards, balloons and such "just because" the other times of the year, too. But I love an excuse to to celebrate! "Valentine's Weekend" is what we called this one.
Spending money on your loved ones for holidays doesn't make it "bad" anymore that not spending money makes it more "real" or virtuous. It's a matter of preference, and even a matter of "love language."
FWIW... <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Got a fresh wax, got my nails did, got an expensive haircut, got a stomach infection.
Spent all day on the couch watching "Sex and the City". SO fed me hardboiled eggs and white rice.
A day and two servings of Mylanta later, I'm still not feeling 100%.

Hmmm my response got super long so I'll condense <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Doonesbury has a great Sunday comic that was the essence of my feeling on this. http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/dailydose/index.html There are many things to spend money on in the world. And spending money on each other is wonderful. But to me, I'd rather spend it on a fondue set that we then used to have delicious meals together and have wonderful evenings with friends - and always remember it was our gift to each other. It makes no sense to me to "lose" 75% of a purchase price to marketing costs by choosing to buy flowers, balloons, dinners etc on "mark-up day". Money earned is a precious commodity. It can go to family value or donated to many good causes. I just can't justify having that money go to mark-up costs.

Guess what!!! My husband came home about 11:30 on Saturday (14th) and he had a box of candy for both my son and I and a beautiful card!! He had stopped on the way home, he said, because he had been sad about being gone on valentines day and I was his sweetheart. I had made some brownies for them both, but nothing could top his thoughtfulness for me. I feel so loved....
