I thought it was pretty sad, that it showed that they thought of marriage as a "lark" thing that you could try on, like a dress in a store. I really don't think it's a good thing to have instant weddings available like in Las Vegas. Heck there are waiting periods on buying guns, but a life long commitment can be done in 2 minutes because the notion springs on you. With all the legal ramifications that marriage is about, it should be something both people have given a lot of thought to. They can LOVE each other without waiting. They can have sex without waiting! But if they want to legally be bound to each other and have all the legal rights and restrictions, they should understand all of that and be 100% certain of standing behind their choice.
Heck I think it should be like a driver's license. There should be a training seminar you go through and a test <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> What if someone gets married without understanding at all what the legal ramifications are? What if they're confused about what it will mean and are mislead by the to-be spouse? Again if they just want to say "I'm her husband" and wear rings they can do that without the legal side. But if they want to have the legal connection they should be fully aware of what that means and what their obligations are.

Speaking of licenses and knowing what you're getting into (not that a class can prepare you), what about parenting?

Marriage and parenting. Two things that are all too easy to slide into and that seem to be just as easy to slide out of.
They should start classes in these things in grade school so kids can get it into perspective.

I agree, Lisa. When I got married, I thought I was prepared. But there was so many things that I thought I knew, but had no idea. My feelings were happy, sad, depressed, guilt, and then again happy for the first 6 months. People need better preparation about marriage. Now we are doing so much better & happier.
Also, I feel marriage is a commitment and not a joke. You put your integrity and word on the line.

Israel & I are starting to plan on having a baby. We kind of feel like we know what we're getting into yet we're still scared. What would your class include?

What ARE the legal ramifications that will be taught and upheld?
Whose value system, culture and/or religious beliefs will be followed if the classes teach more than legalities?
Who gets to teach these classes? What certifications will be needed? How will the certifications be gotten?
Who pays for all of this?

I don't think she was just "trying it on." I think she was serious, and she really liked the guy, and she would have stayed married with him if her parents and lawyers did not interfere (and the reason they *did* interfere was so that he wouldn't be legible for keeping half of her fortune if they get divorced).

As for parenting, I wish there was a way to temporarily castrate everyone, and then return the reproductive rights only whe a couple passes some tests.
Children would be *much* less messed up.
