Some people are great artists who just happen to paint on people. Most body painters are makeup artists who are hired by an ad agency or event producer to create a look for something specific. Many body paintings are collaborative projects done with photographers. Remember when Demi Moore was all naked and painted on the cover of Vanity Fair? Well, photographer Annie Leibowitz was hired by the magazine to take a picture for the cover. She and Demi and a makeup artist all had to work together to get through the 13 hour makeup session to get the finished picture.
